Tunisia. Aspetti Militari. I Parte
Small and
relatively poorly equipped by regional standard, Tunisia’armed forces are
reliant on conscripts, and mach of the equipment across the three services is
out dated and, in some cases, approaching obsolescence. In teerns of internarl
security, the military, role is limited as the National Guard, arguably
better-trained and designed to act as a counterbalance to the armed forces,
takes the lead on domestic stability. Nonetheless, the army was integral to the
Jasine Revolution of January- February 2011 as it refused to fire on protesters
and verbally leant its support to te demonstratons. The military was also
utlised during the Lybian uprising in 2011 , with the army and air force able
to patrol the borders relatively successfully and the navy competently dealing
with migrant flows and search-and-rescue operation in Tunian waters. Tunisia’s armed forces were
well-suited to these constabulary roles,
with more traditional military roles, such as high-tempo war fighting , largely
beyond their current capabilities. Military modernization programmes may be
undermined by the 2011 revolution. As such the country will most probably
continue to rely on surplus stockes of US. French and Italian equipment fot its
arsenal"
